Biological Research

The Tanintharyi Nature Reserve Project, in collaboration with national and international technical advisors, implements biodiversity research and monitoring activities annually. These include biodiversity and wildlife surveys, flora inventories, and annual camera trap installations to document wild animal populations.

Biodiversity, Wildlife, and Flora Inventory Methodology Training and Survey Research

To conduct biodiversity, wildlife, and flora surveys, the project team interviewed 120 households from villages within the project area - Rahpu, Michaunglaung, Zinbar, Yepone, and Thatkekwat.

Camera trap installations

During the 2023-2024 fiscal year, the project installed 20 camera traps in the northern zone (Alaskhan Camp and Raphu LOU areas) to study biodiversity habitats and support research activities. Following seasonal work plans, the team documented 22 mammal species and 6 bird species.

During the 2024-2025 fiscal year, 40 camera traps were installed using the Opportunity Sampling method, based on wildlife tracks/signs observed during monthly patrols and ground conditions. Deployment locations were strategically selected across these areas of the Tanintharyi Nature Reserve Project: Michaunglaung, Kyaukshat, and Thatkekwet sub-camp zones.

Additionally, upon technical recommendations from Friends of Wildlife (FoW), the project installed 20 additional camera traps in February 2025 around the gas pipeline area near vetiver grass plantations in the Mikyawlaung sub-camp zone to monitor biodiversity habitats
